That SUCKS with the roomie. I've been in similar situations like that before and it's awful because the other person feels like a reflection of yourself. But once you really get to know the other party and have an opportunity to flaunt your abilities, that will all go away. The host family understands that you guys are new to the country and the culture, so you can't be too hard on yourself; you'll most likely end up surprising them!
It's a good thing that you get along with the adults! They're the ones that matter most. XD If the kid has issues, so be it.
